At UF Mover Guys, we totally understand how expensive moving can be. We’ll take the pain of packing off your hands, but there are still a few things you can do to help yourself out before you move. We’ve listed ways to keep your place in good shape so you can get your security deposit back in full and put that money right back into savings.
Think Ahead
Sometimes, when you first sign a lease, the future seems to stretch on forever. It’s easy to feel like you’ll be in your new apartment for the rest of time, so security deposits and other move-out related items likely aren’t on your radar yet. To improve your chances of keeping your security deposit, you have to think proactively. Review lease terms early on, so you can make sure you’re adhering to maintenance rules throughout your stay. Otherwise, you may end up scrambling at the last second to clean up messes and reverse damage.
Clean Up After Yourself
When you leave your unit behind, you should leave as few traces of yourself as possible. This means cleaning thoroughly, even in places you might not think about.
- Deep clean the stovetop and oven
- Mop the floors
- Scrub the toilet
- Clear and clean the fridge/pantry completely
- Toss out insect traps
- Remove any nails or tacks in the wall
- Dust off vents and ceiling fans
- Vacuum carpets
You should also clean before hiring a local moving company, so you can clear space for the movers to work.
Fix Minor Damage
When you live somewhere for an extended period of time, it’s not out of the ordinary for small things to be damaged. Survey the unit for minor things in need of repair, such as nail holes, scuff marks, and loose knobs. Remember: only attempt repairs you can actually accomplish. By biting off more than you can chew, you could actually end up causing even more damage.
Document The Space
Before heading out for the last time, take photos and videos to document how the apartment looked when you left it. This gives you evidence of the neat state you left the unit in and prevents landlords from charging unfairly for damage you aren’t responsible for.
Be Present For The Inspection
Your leasing company or landlord might not allow you to attend your apartment’s move-out inspection, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to ask. If they do let you come, you’ll be available to address concerns and answer questions. This makes it easier to defend your case and can speed up the move-out process by giving you an opportunity to dispute damage claims immediately instead of waiting to get charged later on.
Return Access Items
To maintain resident security, you must give all access items back to the landlord or leasing office before moving out. This includes door keys, mail keys, garage remotes, and parking passes.
