Not every move is planned far in advance. When circumstances outside your control impact your living situation, you may be forced to find a new place to stay with little to no notice. If you’re in the midst of dealing with a last-minute move, follow the UF Mover Guys’ list of tricks for maximizing efficiency and convenience. 

Make A To-Do List

When moving in a hurry, your knee-jerk reaction might be to throw planning out the window. To ease the moving experience, though, you should slow down and prioritize organization as much as you can. Compile a clear list of what you need to do to prepare for the move, so you can keep track of each task as you go along. Some items your list should include are:

• Empty your fridge and pantry
• Request time off for moving if necessary 
• Measure furniture to ensure it will fit in your new home

Clear Out The Clutter

The logic here is easy to follow: the fewer items you have to move, the more straightforward moving will be. Saying goodbye to your belongings can be tough, but getting rid of things you don’t need is one of the most effective strategies for streamlining last-minute moves. As you pack, think about what you truly use and what would be better off in the Goodwill donation bin. Change Your Address

This step is easy to forget, but failing to do it can cause lots of headaches later on. Once you know your new address, submit an address change request with the USPS, update your address with the DMV, and update your voter registration documents. You should also update the IRS, the bank, your employer, your doctors, and your insurance company.

Spend Less Time Sorting

If moving speed is your priority, you may have to sacrifice parts of your usual method. Focus less on sorting and more on efficiency, making sure essentials like toiletries and daily-use clothing are easily accessible.

Hiring a local moving company is the number-one way to simplify the moving process. By outsourcing labor, you ease your workload and alleviate your stress. Last-minute moves don’t mean you can’t recruit movers, but it does mean you should schedule them as soon as possible. June Move Report

There is a certain kind of quiet that settles over Gainesville in June.

The students leave. The traffic thins. The roads open up. The city feels easier to move through.

For a few weeks, Gainesville looks like it has slowed down.

It hasn’t.

The movement has simply gone indoors.

Behind garage doors, apartment breezeways, storage unit gates, and half-packed kitchens, people are changing their lives.

• A family is trying to settle before the next school year begins.
• A seller is waiting on one more signature.
• A buyer is standing in an empty living room, imagining where everything will go.
• An apartment lease is ending before the next plan is ready.
• A storage unit is holding the space between what was and what’s next.

June is one of the few months where you can watch Gainesville rearrange itself.

Most people never see it. We do.

This month, our team will handle roughly 175 moves across Gainesville and North Florida. Some will be family homes. Some will be second-floor apartments. Some will involve storage. Some will involve specialty items.

And that is what makes June different. Not the volume. The variety.

The same crew might spend the morning placing a 400-pound safe into a closet inside a newly built home and spend the afternoon carrying boxes down apartment stairs between passing rain bands.

Same day, same city, different world.

People often assume moving is measured in bedrooms. In reality, moves are measured by details.

• The staircase that makes the move more difficult.
• The driveway that changes truck placement.
• The closing date that moved.
• The elevator reservation.
• The summer storm rolling in at two o’clock.
• The couch that needs to be dissassembled and reassembled.

That is one of the biggest lessons twenty years in this business has taught us: Most moving problems aren’t random; they begin as small details overlooked early.

Some students and parents treat move-out like a calculated operation:

• Everything labeled, planned, and timed out perfectly.

Others are scrambling for help:

• “We need storage asap!”
• “Can we book a move this this week?”
• “We didn’t realize how much stuff we actually had.”

This time of year, Gainesville quietly exports a huge amount of talent.
